[Being dead is a bit more ... neutral than he expected.

Perhaps because he's in the Land of the Dead, where you are neither good nor bad - you're simply dead - and somehow that makes things simpler. Stefan doesn't even really mind where he is so much. It's likely better than he deserved, and he's becoming accustomed to the quiet.

He just hopes that Set can't continue to manipulate him from down here.

He's wandering through the halls of the palace, quietly going about his day, when he catches sight of two familiar faces, one of whom makes his heart stop in his chest - or would, if it were still beating. She can't be dead. There was so much left she had to do.

Quietly, he moves a few steps forward before trying to get her attention.]

Stefan Salvatore ... is very stoned.

As well he feels he should be. This is Woodstock. Everyone is stoned.

Fortunately for Stefan, he's only stoned on pot, sprawled in one of the tents as day shifts into night and he's surrounded by flower children, occasionally singing along with the acts on the stage. He's a terrible singer, so it's not a pleasant experience, but right now he's too stoned to care. The live-and-let-live style of the sixties agrees with him in a lot of ways, and it feels like Woodstock is the culmination of that, a decade of relaxation and peach and protesting against things like war and death.

As the high starts to come down, he tips his head back at the sound of a guitar and a familiar voice, squinting for a moment in response. Then he pushes himself up into a sitting position and reaches for the flap of the tent, calling out into the night at ... nothing really, but he's a man on a mission.

"Diana?"

... Maybe he's hallucinating.
somanyadjectives: (what you've become)
After leaving New Orleans, without his brother, Stefan mostly sets about the task of blending in with the allied forces. He isn't bad at it - he's had many years of practice after all, and while none of them are a substitute for Damon, who knows him better than anyone, and had actually seen like he wanted to make amends and move forward instead of being trapped in the past, it's enough. It's being out among people and not feeling the need to manipulate or destroy them.

He feels like he's starting to feel like a person again. It's been a long time since he's felt something like that so he's trying to revel in it as much as he can - though not too much. Too much indulgence might make him forget the dangers that come when he forgets restraint and he never wants to become that person again.

He does, however, make frequent use of the various bars and officer's clubs that they visit on their way to ship out, hanging out and drinking with his friends and applauding loudly when the talent (usually girls) hits the stage in full swing. Most of the time the acts pass without notice, but one night he's in the middle of a bourbon when a very familiar voice takes the stage. His head picks up almost instantly, turning towards he stage with wide eyes as he takes her in.

"Diana?"

The thing that Stefan loved about the twenties is that everything is an indulgence. Even the simplest thing, like taking the girl that he and Rebekah were sharing earlier out and finishing the job is treated like something rare and delicious. The entire atmosphere just screamed luxury and the seductive taste of the forbidden. It's the simple pleasures that have kept driving him forward since Damon left him reeling and bloody, rather than drowning in the guilt and self-loathing that makes him want to stab a stake through his chest.

This? This is infinitely more fun.

His voice is a low, seductive purr as he pushes Maria - Maria Walsh, from Oklahoma City - up against the wall and let his lips tease over her skin. She gives a soft, breathy giggle as he does, not making any move to push him away, but for the sake of propriety needing to put up some kind of protest. "Oh, Mr. Salvatore. What would your girl say?"

He gives a soft chuckle against her skin, taking in the scent of her blood with a deep breath, before murmuring. "I don't think she'll mind."

And with that he'll sink his fangs into her neck and start drinking her dry. Her blood tastes like whiskey and cigarettes, that delightful combination that goes right to his head in a way that no high ever could. God, he loves this decade. He hopes it never ends.

Ten years, as promised, and Stefan doesn't forget. Evening of the first night of the World's Fair has him standing on the bridge facing the statue of Saint Louis, hearing the faint sounds of revelry in the distance. There is so much he wants to do and see, but a promise is a promise, and he isn't going to abandon his date for the evening.

Provided, of course, that she remembers and elects to attend, but that's another matter entirely. For however long it takes, he will wait.

The past decade hasn't been a particularly easy one. The absence of his brother is starting to weigh on him, and while he wishes he knew where Damon is or what he is doing, he also knows that Damon promised him an eternity of misery. That is a promise that he knows Damon fully intends to keep, no matter how sorry Stefan is. He can only hope that he can keep being better, top prove to him that he isn't the burden that Damon believes to be saddled with.

Damon left because Stefan couldn't control himself. Clearly allowing Lexi to teach him control and prove that to Damon is the only way to try and bridge that gap between them.

All the same, he stands and waits for Diana, the first thing he's been excited for in almost ten years. If she doesn't arrive on the first night, he'll continue to wait for every night until she does arrive. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later, though. There is so much of the fair to see.

Stefan Salvatore is a vampire.

It’s not a part of his life that he likes to emphasize, nor does he like to spread around. In fact, when he’s not binging on blood, he tries his best to be a normal guy. Despite the fact that he’s one hundred sixty-one, he goes to high school, or college to be among people, to make friends, start a life. When you die at seventeen, a life isn’t really something you get to have, and Stefan’s been chasing it ever since. When Stefan is on the wagon, so to speak, he only drinks animal blood, which leaves him substantially weaker than other vampires, but it also keeps him from killing people. When he’s on the wagon, the Stefan Salvatore that people meet is sweet, affectionate, and friendly—in fact, he’s probably about as close to human as a vampire can get. He is well read, eloquent, and polite, and has very few enemies based on who he is as a person.

Unfortunately for Stefan, however, he’s not very good at staying on the wagon, and technically, he shouldn’t be. Drinking human blood is in a vampire’s nature, and the fact that Stefan spends so much time fighting that part of his nature instead of learning how to balance it, he falls into these binge cycles, starting with when he was first turned into a vampire and repeating several times over the course of his life. It hasn’t really been shown what events in his life have triggered these binges, but it seems clear that it’s most likely due to some kind of overwhelming negative emotion. According to TVD lore, when a person becomes a vampire, their emotions are heightened—happiness becomes ecstasy, sadness becomes despair. Younger vampires have the ability to turn these emotions off, and often times it’s because they can’t handle the onslaught of emotions on such an intense level. In theory, his first experience with the darker side of his personality came shortly after he was turned. It wasn’t until he met a vampire named Lexi, who taught him control and how not to overindulge himself on blood that he learned how to manage his emotions and gain some sense of normalcy. It’s possible that when this normalcy is threatened, and he tips towards the side of despair, that’s when he turns his feelings off and succumbs to his desire for blood, but it’s also possible that it could be something as simple as needing to drink human blood to heal himself after a fight, and never stopped, slowly succumbing to the darker side of his personality.

Stefan at his worst is the kind of vampire who drowns himself in blood to the point where he blacks out and doesn’t remember what he’s done. He is amoral, without any kind of regard for humanity as a whole—in fact, you could even say that he despises it. He’s the kind of killer who likes the hunt. He plays games with his victims, compelling them into doing things they wouldn’t normally do. He feeds on them with reckless abandon, sometimes so violently that he tears their bodies apart, and he keeps a list of the victims that he feeds on in order to relive the kills at a later date—and that list can get to be a long one, depending on how long he goes on these binges. These situations usually ended with Lexi, Stefan’s best friend and also a vampire, locking him down and detoxing him from human blood until she forces him to feel again. It’s something that Stefan is forever grateful for—even if he curses her for it during the process.

As far as relationships go, the one constant person that’s been in his life, for better or for worse, is Damon. The Salvatore brothers were incredibly close prior to Katherine coming into their lives, and even after Katherine Stefan needs his brother in his life. After he turns, he somewhat nudges Damon into turning as well, and while Damon promises to make him miserable for it, and they eventually come to hate each other, there’s still a bond there. As much as they wish they could, one can’t exist without the other, and even at their lowest, they still keep each other going. With this canon point for Stefan, Damon is a giant pain in his ass, but Stefan also knows that he created this, and blames himself for the monster that he thinks Damon’s become. Under all of that, buried way, way down, there’s love, and there’s gratitude that his big brother is there, but there’s also guilt for making Damon be this way, even if odds are that Damon wouldn’t have left him alone either.

Two of the other most important people in his life are two sides of the same coin and also have the same face: Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce. Katherine is the vampire who turned him, a woman who used compulsion to keep him from fighting the fact that she was a vampire, from rushing his acceptance of what she is. This only led Stefan to believe that she compelled all of it, including his love for her, and it’s caused him to hold a lot of anger towards her for a long time, especially believing that she’s dead. Katherine has just recently been thrust back into his life, due to his relationship with Elena, and in the process of threatening his girlfriend, and making his brother go unhinged when Damon was doing better than he was previously, Katherine also dropped the bomb that she never compelled Stefan’s love. He isn’t entirely sure that he believes it, as Katherine has been known to lie, and shortly after that, she stabbed him when he rejected her, but it does leave a lot of questions as to what Katherine did or didn’t take from him, all those years ago.

Elena, on the other hand, is the girl that Stefan believes could save him. He saved her life after her parents car went off Wickery Bridge, and after being so startled by her comparison to Katherine, he proceeded to be a very impressive stalker to find out whether or not she was the same person. And when he realized he wasn’t, he proceeded to fall head over heels in love with her. Stefan remained in Mystic Falls in order to build a life with Elena, and while there has been a rocky road, with her dealing with his vampirism as well as handling the tomb vampires and Damon, Stefan would still do anything for Elena and feels that they’re at a strong point in their relationship. He believes that Elena is the opposite of everything that Katherine is – kind, compassionate and loving where Katherine was selfish, manipulative and deceitful – and at this point in time, he doesn’t know the significance of why Elena and Katherine share the same face, but he loves Elena for who she is, and will do whatever it takes to protect her from Katherine, while still respecting her ability to make her own choices and find out whatever she needs to find out about her history. It’s why he trusts her to go with Damon and Alaric to Duke at his current canon point, while staying behind with Caroline to help train her in the ways of vampirism.

Stefan is landing in Asgard on the downward swing of his cycle. He’s coming in early season 2, before he meets the Originals, where he’s still on the animal blood diet, and slowly working on rebuilding his relationship with his brother. He will, however, be open to meeting new people, and exploring a little more, once he gets over the weirdness of not being a vampire anymore. After being one for as long as he has and having to control the urges and deal with the emotions, having them taken away from him will be a weight lifted off his shoulders, but also leave him a bit at a loss. He’ll have the opportunity to define himself outside of being a vampire, which he’s strived to do his entire life but never really succeeded. He also will have new powers to deal with which will be fun and interesting in all kinds of ways.

[Stefan is looking rather … exacerbated. Mostly because off all the things he’s heard in his one hundred sixty four years of existence this … is the most ridiculous thing he’s ever heard. Even more ridiculous than werewolves.

And werewolves were really weird.

But still he needs information. And like any good vampire, he knows how to ask the right questions.]

So. I got the kidnapped to Asgard, here to save the world, all of that. And these wrist-screen things mean we can get in contact with all of Asgard, so hi. Stefan Salvatore. I’m new. I was just … wondering if there was maybe a pamphlet or welcome guide or, even better?

A bar.

I feel like I just … really need a bar right now.

[Essentially, the sarcasm is strong with this one. He’s had a long day.]

Basically, any helpful information that isn’t filtered through “Save the World” propaganda or feel like it was written for a five year-old? I’d really appreciate it. Thanks.

[And with that, his face disappears.]

Stefan comes out of Chicago broken.

There are gaps in his memory, blackouts from the times he went too far overboard, and a hunger that drives him further than it should. With each life he takes, his list feels less like an accomplishment and more like a compulsion, especially considering he can't remember half the names on the list. It makes him feel like he's losing more and more control. He doesn't know where or how to stop, so he doesn't even bother.

It probably wouldn't be as bad if he didn't feel like there was something missing. A profound sense of loss that would indicate he's feeling something, but he doesn't know what it is he's lost. He keeps the necklace he found on him at all times, unsure of why he feels the need to protect it so fiercely, but he doesn't dare let it go. It's all he has right now.

No brother. No friends. Just death.

When you're a vampire, death is the one friend that never truly leaves you.

He's currently combing a speakeasy for his latest victim - not Gloria's. The bar has too many shadows that creep under his skin, trying to remind him of something that keep falling through the holes in his memory. He goes somewhere he doesn't know, somewhere he can drown himself in alcohol, blood, and whatever else happens to come his way.

Yep. He's a peach. Have fun, Helen.

"How did you get this, Uncle Stefan?"

His nephew Zachariah, all of six years-old, is staring at the contraption in front of them. Stefan has to admit if he were in Zachariah's shoes, he would be surprised that the man had managed to obtain it as well. It was a little compulsion, a little Salvatore charm, and he managed to convince the current Mayor Lockwood to let him borrow it to show off for his nephew.

After all, Zachariah was some of the only family he had left.

The sun is just starting to go down as Stefan reaches over and scoops up the boy under his arms to set him on the platform of the car. "It's called an automobile. I'ts a machine that is built to do what horses do for a carriage."

Zachariah turns in a circle, reaching for the crank that, from what the mayor had told him, was used to steer. "Does it work?"

Stefan grins. "How about we find out?"

Zachariah's head bobs with a bright smile and Stefan hefts himself onto the driver's seat and starts the engine. "Be careful with him, Stefan," his brother calls from the doorway of the house, arms crossed in front of his chest. "He does not heal as easily as you do."

"We will be fine," Stefan nods. "We'll be back before you know it."

And with that, they drive out into the oncoming darkness.

somanyadjectives: (if i don't say this now)
Stefan lives his life in a haze of blood, with little regard for the things around him. He dances to the tune of the compelled fingers and visits war zones to feed without getting caught. The world is more beautiful, more intense than it ever was when he was human and he just wants to revel in it without all the complications.

He sneaks into the battle camp late at night, dressed in the makings of a soldier and following his nose to the scent of blood. It won't take him long to find some unwitting victim, someone on the edge of death who's death will go unnoticed, but odds are, it won't be long before he doesn't really care anymore. Someone healthy means someone he can play with for longer, compel into dancing or playing or whatever else his mind can come up with.

They're only human, after all. He is so much more than they will ever be.

But for now -- he feasts.
